A Roadmap to Peace and its Unrealistic Plans
Saturday, October 4, 2003, -Hanadi Jaradat, disguised as a female weekender, enters a crowded restaurant in Haifa, Israel, detonates a body bomb and kills at least nineteen Israelis, three of which were children. In retaliation, Israel launches a surprise air strike deep in Syrian territory on Sunday, bombing what it calls a Palestinian terrorist training camp. When the roadmap was presented earlier this year, the plan claims to have established “a realistic timeline for implementation.” The removal of terror and violence by May 2003, phase one of the peace plan, is clearly behind schedule, for violence is still greatly present in the Middle East. Missiles flying, bombs exploding, and gunshots ricocheting are all part of the harsh reality that Middle Easterners face everyday. The agenda of the “Performance-Based Roadmap to a Permanent Two-State Solution to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict,” release on April 30, 2003, is aimed to help end the turmoil and fear these people live in. This idealistic peace plan is constructed with “clear phases, timelines, target dates, and benchmarks aiming at progress,” (Office of the Spokesman, 1) and hopes to bring peace and security by 2005.
