Australian Foreign Policy and it

The position of participating in the making of foreign policy is one that requires a high degree of knowledge in both past and present world issues, as well as the skill to predict situations that may arise in the future.

However the information needed so as to gain knowledge of these events and understand them is not always readily available to the general public due to the sensitivity and secrecy needed for many of the issues.

Foreign policy is seen as a very delicate and complex process that requires expertise in handling.

While foreign policies are made by a select group they are, ultimately publicized to be in “The National Interest” of the Australian population.

An example of this was made by the Howard Government in 1997 who named their foreign affairs White Paper ‘In the National Interest’ and defined it as ‘The Security of the Australian Nation and the Jobs and Standard of Living of the Australian People’. They also claimed that ‘The National Interest’ does not change with a change of Government.

As discussed, foreign policy can be very complex and messy; there are lot of rules and regulations. The politicians work in this environment everyday, they deal with policies and regulations, they have access to secret information. This puts politician in a more favorable position to make an educated decision concerning Australia’s welfare and foreign policies.

In terms of overall globalization this study ranks Australia 21st.

The economic side of foreign policy is the most important and definitely the one most time is spent on as the economy rules our lives. The state of the world and Australia’s economy determines job availability, wages and living comfort. Politicians often use this angle to their benefit by advertising that they will improve the economy therefore improving living conditions for the country.

Not only Australians are affected by our foreign policy, just as we are affected by other countries foreign policies and there pitfalls.

The best way to understand the globalization debate is to look at it as a political phenomenon. The globalization ideology is really just a contemporary version of an old argument about political arrangements of society, reformed so as to serve the interest of the capital more effectively.
