The Case for God

I was approached by one of the students in this class this summer with the question, ‘How do we know there is a God?’ So I thought that would be a good way to start off this class since I haven’t seen some of you in a couple of years. How would you help answer the question, ‘How do we know there’s a God?’ Discussion

Spiritual Awareness/Awareness of God

Let’s start by asking this question: Why are humans aware of God?

When you look at every culture throughout history, what is their one common denominator? All of them searched for a higher being (and we still do). If there is no such thing as God, if God is a big mistake, then the idea should never have existed; at least it should have been eliminated by evolution long ago. There is no rational explanation for this; but there is a rational explanation if there is a God. According to “God,” we are all aware of Him because He made humans in His image and likeness by giving us a spiritual nature. With this spirit came our awareness of many things, one of which is our awareness of a higher authority, which in turn causes us to seek Him.

In addition to our awareness of a higher being, our spirit also gives us our awareness of good

What does God say is the key to having a relationship with Him? Faith. Why did he choose Abraham to start a new nation of believers? Abraham demonstrated his faith. What did Jesus say to the blind man he healed? Your “faith” has healed you. Think of it as God’s currency. Just as “money” is essential to buying food, clothing and homes in this life, and “measuring” is the essential requirement of science, “faith” is the language through which we engage God. God gave humans the gift of faith in order that we can pursue our ultimate destiny – eternal happiness with Him in Heaven.
