Macbeth

The plays of William Shakespeare were written over four hundred years ago, but continue to be of importance and make sense to us in the present day. Macbeth is a tragic story of a good man who gets caught up in circumstances beyond his control. His ambition and vanity lead him murder, suicide and ruin. Although there are many moments of supernatural and unbelievable events in the play, the main idea of humans being imperfect remains as true today as it ever has been.

Introduced to us in the opening scene, the Three Witches set Macbeth upon his murderous path. They tell Macbeth that he will be Thane of Cawdor and later the King. Later they are asked by Macbeth to tell of his future, he finds out what happens from three apparitions. First Apparition [An armed head]: “Macbeth, Macbeth, Macbeth: Beware Macduff.” (Act 4, Scene 1, Line 69-70) His first thought was to be afraid of Macduff but in hearing the following apparition [A bloody child] that he could not be killed by a man that it not born of a woman. He thought he was unstoppable. The third apparition was a child crowned with a tree in its hand; it said that your kingship will come to an end when the forest of Great Berham moves up the hill. Macbeth questions the witches

and demands more information because he can not make sense of any of it. But the witches say, “seek to know no more.” (Act 4. Scene 1, Line 104) In this the witches play the part of evil. They are not very pleasant and think of and do horrible things. “Nose of Turk, and Tartar’s lips, Finger of birth-strangled babe.” (Act 4, Scene 1, Line 29-30) they have no guilt to go with their evil unlike Macbeth.

Macbeth, originally a loyal and honest man, descends into murder and betrayal and is the tale of how ambition can transform even the purest of souls. He was loyal to King Duncan, but his own supreme self-confidence and ambition “Vaulting ambition”(Act I, Scene 7, Line 27) leads to him killing King Duncan to secure his own destiny. Under the influence of lady Macbeth, he is vulnerable when she says he is not a man if he does not kill Duncan, still undecided he says, “Let not light see my black and deep desire” (to kill Duncan) [Aside] (Act 1, Scene 4, Line 51). When the deed had been done Macbeth was put under great emotional stress that also leads to immense guilt. He knew that Duncan trusted him that made him very insecure, not knowing who might come after him; his attitude from this point of was to trust no one. The man at the end of play is one we would barely recognize from the loyal Macbeth we meet at the beginning. Captain: “For brave Macbeth – well he deserves that name” (Act 1, Scene 2, Line 16)

Macduff was the most successful person in the play. He was not evil, even though he was the one who killed Macbeth. In the end, if Macduff did not agree to form that army and put up an alliance against Mac
