Psychological and emotional problems can also lead to binge drinking in a college setting. A feeling of personal inadequacy or low self – esteem is an obstacle that alcohol can, in the short term, overcome. “Courage in a bottle” is a phrase with real meaning for people who suffer from feelings of inadequacy. These feelings may result from generations of parents who do not boost their children’s self – esteem. Unfortunatley, this destrucitv pattern continues because raise their children as they themselves were raise. Studens with low self – esteem also do not have the confidence to resist peer pressure and usally join in what the majority is doing first. They are willing to take risks to be noticed, gain attention and become what they identify as popular. They strive to be the center of attention or the life of the party. Binge drinking puts people at ease, makes them ore sociable, and allows them to be what they want to be without inhibitions. When academic and social life sems meaningless, bingeing gives an escape, from the emptiness, for many students (Rouse, 193). It allows them to forget their everyday lives for a few hours. As a final point, those suffering from emotional problems often feel the need to rebel against parental authority. Binge drinking allows them to do this (Addeo, 114).

And then there are the stresses and expectations associated with academics. The endless workload and the constant pace can become dominant – so much so that they throw the student’s social life out of whack. In response, and again as a short cut to the promised land of social acceptance and belonging, binge drinking rears its head.
