A beast fable is a genre of stories in which the characters are animals that portray certain human virtues, vices, prudences and follies. Typically, beast fables end with a moral that reflects the actions of the animals. Animal farm is a short novel written by George Orwell. It tells the tale of a group of animals who rebel against their master and take over the farm. It uses the techniques of a classic beast fable to communicate a particular moral to the reader.
Animal’s in the story Animal Farm take on human characteristics. All the animals can talk to each other, despite the fact that they are of different species. Even before the revolt they held meetings and had an understanding of each other. “It had been agreed that they should all meet in the big barn as soon as Mr. Jones was safely out of the way.”(Pg 2)
Orwell constructed many complex characters in his novel Animal Farm, and although it is not always obvious, the names of the characters relate to their nature. For example, Old Major was a very peaceful character that had a military routine. The use of a flag in particular symbolizes human and animal similarities. So far all the other human and animal connections have bee practical. Such as, it would be impossible for the community to function if the animals could not talk and communicate. However, the flag is the ultimate human symbol, it has not practicality and is used only to show power.
