Local, Live Music Loss Caused by Noise Pollution
Should Pubs, Clubs, Hotels and Bars in Adelaide be shut down because of Noise Pollution?Pubs, Clubs, Hotels and Bars in Adelaide should not be closed down because of noise pollution. They give Adelaide’s many up-coming bands a place to start out, and learn the tricks of the trade. They give people a place to socialise and meet up, they give teens a safe place to go on a Saturday night; to view the talent we have here in our own backyard. Not to mention a place for tourists to see our talented youngsters. So why should we close down pubs that have been there, giving our local talent a leg-up for years and years, when the people who are making the complaints have only been there for a short period of time? Then again, it’s not really and argument about who was there first, it’s an argument as to why these people are moving into an area so close to a well-known Hotel, in the middle of a city, and even more to the point, why these apartments were built in an Industrial Zone in the first place, and if these developments were mandatory, why were precautionary measures not taken. For example a minimal level of housing insulation would protect against prevailing noise. In my research, I have found that part of this problem
People buying city apartments should also expect noise, when you are living in the middle of a fair sized city, in an apartment above one of the busiest streets in town, of course you are going to have noise. Though if they do need to live so close to the city then they should learn to live with the noise, because the noise they are complaining about is not noise, it is music, and it has always been there, and hopefully always will. “Hotels are a places of pleasure and incubators of talent. Without musicians and singers scratching a marginal living from pub gigs, Australian pop culture would be arid and derivative. The pubs and clubs are the city’s heartbeat, emphasis on the beat.” There are few places – besides good hotels and bars – that have live music playing, and give support to local up-coming musicians. Great, renowned hotels like The Exeter, The Governor Hindmarsh, The Austral, The Crown and Anchor, The Crown and Sceptre, and Tivoli, to name a few, employ a lot of musicians, mostly young, local, emerging talent, which gives these bands a chance to learn the tools of the trade and to gain experience in performing. So if all these venues are to keep their noise down to 60db – equivalent to the sound of a television set – do you think these hotels will keep giving local bands a go, or will they instead get themselves a nice quiet, inexpensive jukebox.
