What is the Economic Impact of the Superbowl

Imagine if cities competed for the right to host Christmas, Halloween, or Easter. Superbowl Sunday is America’s unofficial holiday, and every year, NFL cities around the country fight for their right to a Superbowl Party. Host cities know several years in advance whether or not they will be chosen, and when a city is chosen, there is a lot to do to prepare. Generally speaking, sports stadiums, downtown corridors, and hotels go through major renovations meant both to accommodate the influx of Superbowl fans, vendors, and press from out of town, but also to shed the best light on the city while it is in the public eye. The economic impact of the Superbowl on a city is astronomical, and in some cases hard to quantify.

To be sure, there are costs associat

ed with being the host city for the Superbowl. Renovations cost money, but on the plus side, they also create jobs. With jobs come more regional prosperity and less homelessness. The jobs are generally short lived, however, as once the renovations are done, there is precious little else to do. Negative fallout from paying for renos in advance of the Superbowl, and positive change in the form of temporary employment for thousands is just the tip of the iceberg wherein the Superbowl is concerned.

When the game is over, a whole different group of vendors is set, ready to sell the wares that herald the winning team, while every bar for 40 miles around the stadium shifts into high gear to champion the winners and to console the fans of the losing team. Bets
