Roe v. Wade Celebrates 39th Anniversary

On Sunday, January 22nd, the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade in which the Supreme Court legalized abortion nationwide, hundreds of anti-abortion activists gathered in the nation's capital. March for Life, a nonprofit group, organized an hour and a half long program that included speakers, music, and a march outside of the White House. Demonstrators gathered early to picket and recite prayers (Ure).
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, who unsuccessfully ran for president in the last election, joined the crowd. While speaking to the protestors, Huckabee claimed that he originally decided to pursue politics because he is "pro-life" and believes "if we get this issue wrong, we will inevitably get all the other issues wrong too" (Ure).
"Whether the baby is in the mother's womb, or whether it's 8 years old or 18 or 80, that life has value, not because I said so, but because God made it to have value," he continued (Ure). .
Although President Obama was at the White House during the demonstration, he did not join the protestors. Instead, he issued a statement early Sunday morning that reinforced his commitment "to protecting a woman's right to choose and this fundamental constitutional right" (Ure).
"While this is a sensitive and often divisive issue, no matter what our views, we must stay united in our determination to prevent unintended pregnancies, support pregnant women and mothers, reduce the need for abortion, encourage healthy relationships, and promote adoption," the statement read (Ure). .
Although Obama has remained true to the fundamentals of the Roe v. Wade decision, the majority of politicians have actually turned against the law and become pro-life. For instance, 2011 saw more anti-women's health laws passed by state legislatures than ever before. In fact, 24 states collectively passed 92 new abortion restrictions - three times more than those passed the previous year.
