The Chrysanthemums/The Story of an Hour

"The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin, is the story of a passionate woman who is held back by her husband from reaching her full potential. This story line strikes a strong comparison to John Steinbeck's, "The Chrysanthemums". Using characterization, both authors created women who have a desire to be more than what society expects or allows. The characterizations go from the women being saddened by their lives, to each one coming to a personal revelation of what they wish for - finishing with an unexpected transition from their sad repression.
In these short stories, the main characters Elisa (The Chrysanthemums)and Louise (The Story of an Hour) both live in the shadow of their husbands. Louise had believed that when her husband died "There would be no one to live for her during those coming years; she would live for herself," (Chopin 170) this shows that she had been under her husband's control and was happy to be free. As for Elisa, she'd allowed her husband to incorrectly anticipate her idea of an evening in town, is demonstrates how she has accepted living under the labeled role of women in that time period. Elisa and Louise felt as if they lived their life to please their husbands and do house chores. In both stories, we're given pertinent descriptions of what most marriages were like in the early 1900's. .
Fascinated with their personal discoveries, both woman are filled with joy and thoughts of freedom - and to see this fulfilled, it would come when their husbands were gone for good. "But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely. And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome," (Chopin 170) this shows that Louise is happy to be free from her husband's needs. As well as when Elisa speaks to the Tinker she speaks to him with passion showing that she wants more out of life and that is what her husband does not understand.
