Binge Drinking

There has been something happening at college campuses that have been on an extreme rise for the past couple of decades. This something is “binge” drinking. This isn’t the binge when you go out and get drunk for several days nonstop. This binge is where you drink as much as possible just to get drunk. This is becoming very common around college campuses everywhere. The level of binge drinking by college students is a severe problem. What these people don’t know is that they are hurting themselves very badly. Binge drinking on college campuses is on the rise and something needs to be done in order to control it from getting even more out of hand.

Binge drinking has been around forever. It just has never received a name because it hadn’t evolved to what it is now. Now it is a common name especially having to do with the college life. For men, binge drinking is defined as having five or more drinks in a row during the past two weeks, and for women as having four or more in a row. The Harvard University study done back in 1993 showed that 44 percent of college students regularly binge drink. Heavy drinking in high school will usually continue to probably more drinking in college. You are

There are plenty of opposing views that surround the subject of binge drinking. Some say that if you lower the drinking age then students will drink moderately and learn their tolerance. This would then allow them to drink in the open without breaking the law. This might then create fewer parties with excessive drinking for them to go to. People would get used to it and it wouldn’t be as big of a deal to drink when you are of age. The only problem with this is that there is a lack of evidence to show that this would work. Some might say other countries have lower drinking ages and they don’t have big problem with binge drinking. Well, this is not true because other countries face some of the same problems with binge drinking just like the U.S. The world’s highest consumption rates of alcohol are in Europe. There are at least nine countries in Europe that have higher levels than the U.S. including France, which is at the top of the list. This results in more death caused from alcohol.

In conclusion, binge drinking on college campuses is on the rise and something needs to be done in order to control it from getting even more out of hand. There might not ever be a good way to get rid of binge drinking on college campuses. Someone will have to keep trying in order to maybe find a way that works well. There is no telling how long that will be.

Many people die every year on college campuses from problems having to do with alcohol. The University of Virginia has the most known of alcohol-related deaths since 1989 and the number stands at 17. A couple of years ago a freshman died at Louisiana State University from binge drinking. One night all the pledges of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity went with some fraternity members to a bar. All of the pledges got so drunk they couldn’t even walk to the car. The campus police found out and went to the fraternity house and found four of the pledges unconscious. They were rushed to the hospital and soon after that Benjamin Wynne was dead from alcohol poisoning. This is why binge drinking can be very dangerous.

Many colleges are trying to tighten the rules. They think that
