When attributing to circumstance one can believe a person acts in a certain way because the situation at the time initiated that action by leaving no choice. It is important to note that when thinking this way the action was not influenced by the person, but from an outside source. When a person reacts to something he or she is acting due to a stimulus. In the middle of a date your boyfriend makes a comment and you get made and slap him. Your boyfriend was the stimulus that caused you to slap him. Now, on the other hand, if you had slapped your boyfriend as a form of initiating a little for-play then you would be responsible for your action. Imagine that one of your friends has never drunk a day in their life. You and your friend travel to Cancun where nether of you have ever been to before and you see your friend drink for the first time. It turned out that someone had slipped some sort of a drug into his or her soda and she was not aware at all of his or her actions. This is an example of external attribution with high consensus, low consistency, and high distinctiveness. Another example with the same construct could be when a guy shoots a gun for the first time while hunting. He is normally timid when doing things for the first time but this time he showed no hesitation and it the target on the first shot. He was doing something that many people have done before, but he had never done. This demonstrates high consensus, low consistency, and high distinctiveness since people usually only shoot guns while hunting. Even though it is hard to look all three principles it is a necessity.

Imagine you and a friend of yours go to a theme park that you have been to a thousand times. This time there is a new ride that you have never ridden before you two decide to ride it. Just as your friend as done on every roller coaster ride at this park she or he freaks out squeezing the hell out of your arm just after buckling up before the ride even starts. Most people at least wait for the ride to start before freaking out. This is an example of an internal attribution with low consensus, high consistency, and low distinctiveness. Another good example of this is when I was traveling back from Atlanta to Athens stopped on the side of the road to help put out a grass fire that was spreading with the blanket I always keep in my truck. The fire had already spread length of about 65 yards alongside of the road and had reached the tree line. The consensus of people driving by just looked and kept going. The only other two cars that pulled over were both off duty fire fighters. I always try to help out wherever I can no matter what the situation is. It is clear that I was acting upon an internal attribution.
