Blindness is basically the incapability of an individual to see or be able to use their eyes to look around them. However, in literature blindness is used as a symbolic expression and is used to describe someone who is not necessarily impaired by sight but is instead figuratively blind or oblivious to things, incidents, emotions and people around them. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, this figurative form of blindness is used to describe the majority of characters, but this trait is mostly obvious in the characters of Daisy, Myrtle and Gatsby. This blindness causes Daisy to indulge in self obsession, Myrtle ignores reality and lives in a fantasy world and when Gatsby fails to see life as it really is, without an obsession to be blinded by, the entire facade falls apart and each character is left shocked with the reality they ignored.

Blindness is found is almost every human being from time to time but it’s effects on the lives of some are extremely judgmental. From blindness, comes self-obsession, ignorance of reality and an incapability of perception of character leading to confusion, chaos and ashes. In conclusion, the blindness in these characters eventually lead them to the fate they achieve and it caused them to be careless, hurt others, hurt themselves and eventually apart from Daisy, cause their own death. At length it can be said that blindness leads to confusion, confusion leads to chaos and chaos leads to destruction hence human beings require full insight into the world and people around them in order to actually survive and live life to the fullest extent.

She is completely blinded by what she believes is the way things should be instead of looking at reality and realize how childish her thoughts are. She is also blind to her own actions and the way she is ruining her marriage by having an affair with Jay Gatsby. While reading about the incident in New York it can be seen that she is extremely confused and does not care or think highly enough about either Gatsby or Tom to make a solid decision as to who she wants to be with. She talks about how “she did love him [Tom] once but she loved Gatsby too”[Pg 126], leaving Gatsby completely speechless and Tom shocked. She also does not realize the hurt she causes her husband, to whom she represents the betraying wife and to Gatsby who almost worships her and has all his life tried to become rich in order to become worthy of her. She is also blind to actual damage and hurt, which in many cases was caused by her. In the case of Gatsby, looking at the way she talks to him and the things she says, it can be said that she is in love with him, but when she comes in danger of being implicated of Myrtle’s death, she leaves with Tom not even stopping to say goodbye to Gatsby. “There was an unmistakable air of natural intimacy about the picture, and anybody would have said that they were conspiring together.”[Pg 138], an observation by Ni
