Trace the consciousness and relationship of man, of his god, and his place in the world through art, architecture, literature, and music. How has his culture and values grown? The very earliest form of art that can be found came in 15,000 B.C. At this time came a big change in self-expression through visual art. Cave paining have been found in Lascaux and Altamira. They have also found statutes like the Venus of Willendorf. These works show the earliest works that tell the need of creativity in the human life. The early cave paintings show hunting and animals, which were very important in their way of life. Those two items provided the people of this period with food and clothing. Some of the other early pieces of art that have been found are statutes of women. The statutes have their sexual characteristics enlarged showing the importance of women to give life through birth. In the very beginning to be a civilized society there were certain characteristics that one must possess. Some of those characteristics were, some type of urban life, construction of permanent settlements, some form of written communication so they could share and preserve stories and history, and lastly they needed to have a shred rel
Now we are seeing a move toward living together and also seeing need for creativity and culture. We have seen a movement toward certain types of building. We seeing people write masterpieces that are still around today. I think the Greeks were some of the most influential people even on today’s society. We see the Greek system still at work at out colleges and universities around the world in the form of Greek fraternities and sororities. There plays are still done in theaters around the world and there style of architecture is still being used. Mesopotamia had a diverse culture. The people brought with them different languages, religion, and customs. Mesopotamia can be divided into two different cultures, the Sumerian and Semitic. The word Semitic comes from the name Shem, a son of Noah. So even now we are seeing a pattern of the world, as we know it today take shape. The most common of these people are Jewish and traditionally spoke Hebrew. The most important thing that the Sumerian people did was inventing the first form of writing known as Cuneiform. With this new talent they were able to keep records and trade with other civilizations and therefore they formed into civilized towns. The main center of the community was the temple. The temple was where the particular god who watched over that community resided. Lastly we come to the High Middle Ages (1150 to 1300). This period we see a lot of changes. We see the coming of the city and with that brought trading, social, religious needs. The economy was becoming good and stable. During this time we saw the building of the Gothic style cathedrals that are still used today. These cathedrals were built with massive ceilings with arches throughout them. Probably the most common talked about pieces of architecture inside the cathedrals are the stained glass windows. They were put in to illuminate light, and that they do. Also during this time with the new cities growing we see the need for education outside the church. So with this need it leads us to the first universities, as we know them today. The monasteries became what they are today, not what they had been used for as a central source for the people.
