Movie Review - The Patriot

This movie is very inspirational and you can't help but feel a sense of patriotism while watching it. The Patriot is one of my favorite movies, maybe because I am sort of a history lover. It depicts America in the colonial period, 1776, in Charleston, South Carolina. It is the dawn of the Revolutionary War against the British and the Articles of the Confederation were barely holding together the thirteen colonies. Benjamin Martin is the main character and is a veteran war Captain who fought heroically in the French Indian war.
Benjamin Martin is a widower with seven children living on a plantation outside Charleston. Martin travels to Charleston and voices his opposition of going to war with Britain at a town hall. At the town hall, the delegates are debating whether or not to levy to fund the Continental Army. Martin speaks and says he will not support war with Britain. He also states he does not support King George's taxation without representation, but wants to protest it with further diplomacy and not war. However, the delegation votes for the levy to fund the Continental Army and shows support for war with Britain. Supporters cited the forthcoming declaration of independence in Philadelphia as motivation to join in support of the war. .
Martin's eldest son Gabriel immediately enlists to fight for the Continentals without his fathers' approval. The movie then fast forwards to the year 1780, and the battle of Charleston. Gabriel is wounded carrying dispatches and goes home to his fathers' house for aid. In the Battle of Charleston, on April 2, 1780, the Americans suffer their worst defeat of the revolution and three thousand patriots are captured. (Cite: History.com) .
During the battle, Martin and his family provide aid to the wounded soldiers of both sides. A cruel colonel with the British Army comes to the house and orders the destruction of Martin's home and land. He also orders Martin's son Gabriel arrested as a spy and hung.
