A Study in Hemispheric Specialization

Hemispheric specialization showed how the two different hemispheres held advantage in conducting various tasks. A divided visual field task tested whether pattern recognition would have an advantage towards a hemisphere. Based on previous research it is hypothesized that the right hemisphere would have an advantage towards tactile pattern recognition. This experiments had eight participants participated in a task that separated images into two different categories. One that had distinct patterns or one that did not. The results showed that the reaction times were unreliable and it was not consistent with the current research. Based on the result of this experiment, there was not an advantage in the hemispheres that distinguished patterns that showed that global processing was not apart of pattern recognition. .
             Introduction.
What part of the brain does a person use when distinguishing whether if there was a pattern present? Previous psychological experiments have discovered that different side of the hemisphere was better at performing certain type of tasks. Gazzaniga and colleagues (2009) had summarized studies of hemispheric specialization from split patients to regular subjects that have demonstrated hemispheric asymmetry. There were experiments done that showed that language and detail processing had more of an advantage in the right hemisphere while visuospatial and whole processing was in the right hemisphere. Milner and colleague (2001) studied how split-brain patients would memorize distinct patterns after a delay and showed that the right hemisphere was better at performing that task. The recent researches didn't focus on how regular patients responded to pattern recognition and only tested the subjects' ability to memorize patterns and how it was recalled later. This research applied regular college students in a divided visual field task that indicated the right hemisphere would be the part that is responsible for pattern recognition.
