Changes: Good or Bad?

James Joyce’s short story, “Eveline,” concentrates on a young woman trying to escape the hard life she has. Eveline lives at home with her father and does everything for him. She dislikes being the slave of the house, so she tries to get out of the house every chance she gets. On one of her explorations out of the house, she meets a man named Frank whom she adores. Eveline sees him as an escape route and plans “to explore another life with Frank” (405) in Buenos Aires, but at the last minute, Eveline decides not to leave the familiar life she has been living for approximately 19 years. A big change like this will place fear into anyone’s mind no matter how strong they are. As displayed in this story, a change in one’s life is not good if one is not ready for it.

Eveline has been living in Dublin her whole life. Joyce writes, “Tizzie Dunn was dead, too, and the Waters had gone back to England. Everything changes. Now she was going to go away like the others, to leave her home” (404-405). This shows that people have come and gone, but Eveline has stayed throughout everything. Her life is unacquainted with change. Eveline knows nothing other than her life at home. Eveline has “never dreame

made it much harder to escape her difficult life. Eveline was also given the duty of taking care of

Eveline made a promise to her mother “to keep the home together as long as she could” (406). This would be easy if she did not have to deal with her father. “He had begun to threaten her and say what he would do to her only for her dead mother’s sake” (405). He was a violent man that beat Eveline’s two brothers. She feels in danger of her father because he threatens her with violence. These threats make her heart tremble and make it easier to leave Dublin. This obviously shows that the house is not “together.” When she heard the organ the evening she was leaving, she remembered the night she made the promise to her mother. The memory of that night

Once Eveline is at the docks, she really starts to think about her decision. The sea represents the new life that she was about to embark on. Moving to Buenos Aires would mean a lot of changes. Changes that are probably too much for Eveline to handle such as being in a new country, married, treated with respect, and not treated like dirt the way her mother was. Eveline was afraid of all of these changes. She was used to going through the same routine everyday. Eveline knows that she was going to have a different routine and it scared her. She would not be cleaning, working, and even cooking everyday in Buenos Aires. Frank would care for her everyday unlike her father. Eveline also has a very boring life at home. She was nineteen and out of school, but she always sits “at the window watch
