Narrative-Visual Interpretation
The purpose of this report was to critically analyse and evaluate Hieronymus Bosch’s artistic style and to understand his technique of narrative, needed to create an environment that depicts an interpretation of the word Ethics. The report investigates the artist’s life, his philosophy and style reflected through one of his works from his late work phase: The Garden of Earthly Delights. The report will also outline how the environment of word Ethics will be created, and what emotion will this work exude to the audiences viewing it. It is not known much about the artist’s life or where his unique style has originated from during the Renaissance Period. A wide range of books featuring different theories written by different art historians, specialising in the subject of Bosch and his style was read. The evidence was then compared and critically evaluated, in order to decide treatment and interpretation of his work. The definition of word Ethics was looked up in a Catholic dictionary and Wikipedia encyclopaedia. The exterior panel is thought to represent The Third Day of Creation, is painted in a green-grey grisaille technique. In the narrative sequence, it depicts the growth of plants and trees, the fragmentation of dark and light, as argued by Linfert (1989; ). The left wing features the creation of Eve, set against fantastic looking landscape, filled with plants and animals. In the centre, the Fountain of Life is included. Four streams of water are flowing from plant looking branches, and in the circular base, sits an owl -believed by some critics to symbolize witchcraft, implicating that even in the final days of creation of mankind, damnation was inevitable. The bird kingdom is resting in the pool of water around the Fountain. A group of hybrid animals resides near the base of a date palm, representing the Tree of Knowledge, around which the serpent is curled, the Devil, situated on the right shore. On the left, deer, unicorn and horses are drinking water. An elephant and giraffe are also included, but they would have not been models based on everyday life e.g., the unicorn. It is believed that Bosch would have viewed them in perhaps the works of Italian Renaissance painters. The animals consume smaller animals, e.g., the bird eats the lizard. Instead of showing the Paradise as an ideal peaceful environment, it is foretelling the damnation that is yet to come (ref: ).
