The Prussian Military and German Unification

Would it have been possible through diplomatic means? To think that the unification of Germany would be achieved primarily by their military strength is plausible, however to bring about the cooperation of so many independent states and solidify Wilhelm I position as German Emperor was achieved not merely by military prowess, but multiple coinciding forces. Wilhelm's kingdom already stands as a dominant force in northern Germany, leads the Zollverein and with it, economic and political power over independent states. Reform sweeps across the Prussian military, but perhaps it alone will not be enough to bring the German Kingdoms under one banner. Prussia is blessed with opportunities and strength, troubled by an already fading great power, the Austrian empire and the glory of the French empire, desperate to assert dominance over the German states. While the growth of nationalism in the German states following both the industrial revolution and Napoleon Bonaparte's campaigns without a doubt helped reinforce the idea of a single nation for the German people, it would require the right opening on the European stage combined with both a resilient nation and a tough leadership willing to do what is necessary. .
Prussia at the time was already in a strong position, it enjoyed stability and economic power through the Zollverein. The Zollverein enabled the northern Germanic states to experience substantial economic growth but more importantly, allowed Prussia to gain a stronger political influence over the German states at the expense of the Austrian empire - the great Prussian rival. Prussia's leadership of the trade union and large sphere of influence allowed other states to recognise her as a leader in a unified Germany. The impact for this unity was great " the unified structure for a currency, communication between the states and the railway infrastructure built would be of huge benefit for Prussia.
