Unfortunately people are so accustom to violence that they feel as though they have no business getting involved in a situation where someone is getting abused. Mahatma Gandhi said, "I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent. " Men are seen as the perpetrators of violence and women and children are seen as the victims.
Women are often seen as victims of violence due to them appearing very vulnerable however this is just a stereotype that many men believe. A woman can be the most confident, secure person and still be a victim of violence as there are so many different types of violence. Dating violence, domestic and intimate partner violence, emotional abuse, human trafficking, sexual assault and abuse, stalking, violence against women at work and violence against women with disabilities are just a few examples. Violence and abuse affect women from all kinds of backgrounds every day. Sometimes, women are attacked by strangers, but most often than not they are hurt by people who are close to them. Violence and abuse can cause terrible physical and emotional pain and can take place at work, on the street, or at home. Danny Boyle showed the audience how women are treated in India by including the scene of Latika getting her cheek cut by Javed simply because she ran away as she longed for Jamal and freedom. This scene was used to show that Javed wanted to prove and show that he is extremely superior towards Latika. For many women in India physical abuse is something that may happen more than once a day, they may not have done something unbelievably unacceptable like Latika but they could have made a minor mistake like not putting the right ingredients into a sandwich.
