The Virginia Stamp Act Resolutions, 1765

For hundreds of years Americans have been forced with rules and regulations otherwise known as laws which all ultimately attempt to remove one or more of our rights to freedom. Imposing the Stamp Act of 1765 was no different. A war had incurred along with extreme debt and now those debts had to be paid. However, who was going to pay this debt, and hence the propaganda from Parliament and the people began running rampant.
Upon the implementation of the Stamp Act, the British colonies began in North America became very angry and resistant to being taxed. Patrick Henry, as a member of the House of Burgesses, proposed several resolutions to challenge the authority of Parliament's Stamp Act.1 Henry set forth five resolutions, otherwise known as the "Virginia Stamp Act Resolutions, 1765"," stating that the people that came and formed the colonies in America were Englishmen and thus should retain all their properties and rights, extending to their immediate direct relatives. He went on to state that any taxes that are to be imposed on the people of these new colonies should only come from the people that represent, and live among them, and not Parliament.
I agree with Henry's resolution's, however I find myself torn with the thought that this extensive debt was incurred fighting for the freedom to establish these colonies for these North American Englishmen to now reside. Debt had to be paid, and I agree that when, where and how much should be decided by the actual colonies themselves as each individual varied in what they were worth and could afford. Henry was right in his efforts to stand up and fight for these new colonies of people and their descendants. They were in fact British and in order to make better lives fought the hard battle personally, physically, and mentally to build new opportunities in a new land. A fair taxation had to be considered for all people and not just the wealthy.
