The Affordable Care Act


            The Affordable Care Act was designed by President Obama to help reform the health care system. The affordable care act will implement measures that will lower health care costs and improve system efficiency, and to eliminate industry practices that include denial of coverage due to pre-existing conditions. Over 44 million Americans are not covered by medical insurance because they cannot afford it or have had preexisting illnesses, this law will give these Americans medical insurance benefits. Before this law was passed insurance companies could deny patience, drop the coverage in the middle of treatment, and have a maximum dollar amount they were willing to pay. .
             A CNN interview was posted on huffingtonpost.com about a woman denied healthcare after being raped, Anderson Cooper the interviewer stated "Christina Turner was drugged and raped by two men in 2009. After taking anti-HIV drugs prescribed by her doctor as a preventative measure, Turner was denied health insurance. The HIV drugs, Turner was told, raised too many health questions for her insurer." The affordable care act is targeted to prevent cases like this from happening. The law gives countless benefits to Americans in need of healthcare, but also damages others. With premiums being increased for those who already have health insurance, and business owners being penalized for not giving full health coverage to full time employees many Americans are against the act. In this paper I will summarize what the affordable care act does, the positive effects of the act and the negative effects. .
             The affordable care act benefits millions of Americans in need of health insurance. Now that the law has passed, no one can get denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions or limit benefits for that condition. Also coverage for children under 19 cannot be excluded, limited, or denied coverage based upon health conditions or disabilities.
