Club Sports

At a school known nationally for its strong athletic programs, it is easy to forget that not all athletes are superstars. We cheer on our varsity athletes with enthusiasm, while at the same time overlooking those students who compete for the Maroon and Gray before just a handful fans, without scholarship money, but with just as much spirit as any NCAA athlete. Now, when they are improving their records and proving they bleed Minuteman maroon as much as anyone. It is time for the Valley community to recognize the valuable contributions club athletes make to Umass.

Whether it’s the fault of title IX and its demanding quotas or the football team sucking up every single last dollar the athletic department has, Club teams get the shaft. I witnessed the wrestling club almost get muscled out of the wrestling room by the girls swim team. Thankfully logic prevailed and the swim team stretched elsewhere instead of the only room in school devoted to a sport that was cut more then 20 years ago. Why was this glorious sport cut? One word…Money. Wrestling isn’t exactly the most popular sport here in New England thus it didn’t have a huge fan base, which equals the school losing money on the sport. When title IX was created wr

Club sports help the spirit of friendly competition among all students, giving everyone the chance to live the ideal Athletic dream. This idea is essential to the spirit of Umass. Club sports offer students a chance to compete in sports not offered by the university. Massachusetts athletes have the opportunity to compete in Bike racing, Rugby, Fencing, Crew, Ultimate Frisbee and Wrestling, none of which are offered as varsity sports. These student-athletes know that hoards of fans will never be there to cheer them on, nor will they ever have a pep rally before a game but they play just as hard anyway. These young warriors put in as much time as any varsity athlete but it is easy to see who the university holds in higher esteem. The fencing brought home 5 medals already this year, Crew and Rugby have been a much storied team in their own right. With the amazing accomplishments these teams have already done, why don’t they move up to varsity status? One word…Money.

In Conclusion, Club teams here at Umass need some help. Funding is what it all comes down to here. The school needs to allocate more funds to help these teams or ask the state to throw some money their way. If this school wants to take the next step and become a national force to be reckoned with in sports they must make the effort department wide. They cannot just move the football team to D-1 A and leave everyone else behind. They must bring every sport both varsity and club with them. You only get what you pay for, if you want
