Sleeping and the Human Body

Sleeping is probably one of the most amazing things a person enjoys to do. Sleep is a time when our bodies and brains are at rest. Less energy is required compared to when we are awake and active or even awake and at rest, which allows us to save energy. Everyone seems to feel differently after a sleep session. We enter an unconscious state of mind, which makes our body relax more. However, what is it that happens to make one feel relaxed? While we sleep, our body works in a way that when we wake up we may feel more rested and more energized. If we go in depth about what happens step-by-step we would be shocked by what we may learn from sleep. Often, we may tend to not really put thought into "what happens" when we do things. It's interesting to learn about the functions our body takes.
Studies have shown that "we spend about one-third of our lives asleep."(2014, Sleep Foundation) As soon as we fall into unconsciousness, functions in our bodies start taking their places in order for us to get the best sleep and benefits from it. Sleep is the time our body can go through repairing and detoxification. It has been said that when a person doesn't sleep their full eight hours, they are expected to have a shorter life span compared to the rest that sleep fully. Poor health may come from poor sleeping patterns. Lack of sleep will definitely affect our mood and perception of things. Sleep is a great medicine for our bodies. .
The first stage of sleeping is when we start getting semi-unconscious. Our eyes roll and as our body undergoes into a deeper sleep our eyes start to twitch, which is caused by the "rapid eye movement."(2014, Sleep Foundation) This (REM) happens approximately around every 90 minutes throughout our sleeping session. Dreams often occur during this time as well. Believe it or not, our brain activities are higher while we sleep due to that our muscles are more relaxed.
