The New York Obesity Crisis


            Throughout our lives all of us make bad healthy choices daily or very often, but how are those choices really going to affect us. In todays society we have very large amounts of processed junk foods available accompanied by sugary beverages that containing a tremendous amount of empty calories. A real problem is the effect that these drinks have in our bodies. We also know that large amounts of calories will most likely result our bodies to increase in weight. Knowing the health issue that our society is facing these days Bloomberg has proposed to ban soda in large amounts. His decision to ban soda in large amounts came as a result of the overall high rate of obesity and obesity linked health issues in New York State. Although banning soda in large amounts might be a good idea Bloomberg faces difficulties because of his focus in body size and Gov't money losses rather than focusing on health itself. .
             On his Speech at Montefiore Medical Center Michael Bloomberg tackles the obesity crisis in New York State and particularly in the Bronx. He mentions that people face difficulties to maintain a healthy weight. As a result of these difficulties in maintain a healthy weight are unhealthy product like sodas that contain extremely large amount of sugars. Bloomberg says " Obesity is the second leading cause just after smoking of preventable deaths in our city" making it clear that actions towards healthy choices are necessary to be made. He also mentions the actions that have already been made to make healthy foods more accessible, as for example the farmer market on different places and along side hospitals. To empower the decision to ban soda in large amounts Bloomberg states" Over the past decade smoking among adults New Yorkers has dropped 30% resulting in more than 450,000 fewer smokers in our cities" showing the success that has been achieved by making more smoking related regulations.
