Overview of American Imperialism


            In the nineteenth century, America sought the route of imperialism in the Philippines in order to protect them from oppression of the Spanish rule. This decision would cause a lot of chaos, this will be a revolution in American foreign policy. America has always had a strong sense of nationalism, and throughout this essay you will see that the ordinances throughout the 1700s and the philosophies of Manifest Destiny as well as the Monroe Doctrine will have a dramatic impact on this argument. Americans wanted a lot for themselves, and annexing some land would be a necessity in order to meet their needs. Throughout history america has always been expansionistic, but had limited itself to North America, Americans were hungry for empire. .
             In documents C and D the anti-imperialist side of America is looked over. This is a political game that will prove to be a tough fight. A strong advocate, Mark Twain makes it clear in Document C that this is a well debated topic and both sides need to be viewed before making a final decision. He argues that America was to content with itself, we needed to spread our wings, and what a better opportunity to do that with than the Philippines. America used the philosophy of Manifest Destiny as an excuse to take the imperialistic route, it was a chance given by god and we must take it. This is also viewed in another political cartoon (Document D), McKinley will bring what the people want to the table, but maybe Americans are a little too greedy. These are countries, lives, and cultures that we are tossing around. America bought the Philippines from Spain for $20 million We bought a country and America has to decide what to do with it. After re-reading the Treaty of Paris, Twain concluded America wasnt in the Philippines with the intent to free them, but to subjugate them. We were hungry for empire and the Philippines would be a perfect place to start. .
             The imperialistic way is one of which this country still uses to this day.
