The Benefits of Bilingualism

Bilingualism is the ability to use two languages proficiently. However, being bilingual is very challenging; learning another language besides from someone's first language usually takes a lot of time and effort. Some people believe that the advantages of being bilingual far outweigh any disadvantages, so the hard work and persistence will always pay off. On the other hand, some people believe that learning a second language is not necessary and is a waste of time. In Spanish Lessons by Christine Marin, she introduces the idea of how being bilingual can be beneficial by talking about her personal experiences. Through her realization of her identity as a Chicano who speaks both Spanish and English, she was motivated to have outstanding achievements such as being the liaison between the Mexican-American Students Organization and the University of Arizona. Like Marin, I am proud to be able to speak two languages because I feel like I am superior compared to other people who only speak one language. Bilingualism is very helpful in getting people ahead in life.
If one speaks two languages, it is easier to expand socially and to gain social support. Clearly, this can lead to better chances at success. The reason is that bilinguals are able to communicate with a wider variety of people with diverse background since bilinguals can network with those who speak different languages. There is a higher chance for them to meet potential business partners, people that share the same views and even one's Mr. Right or Mrs. Right. The author of Spanish Lessons, Marin, is also a bilingual. She claims that she made friends with Chicanos after being exposed to the activities organized by them. (Marin 81) Her languages provided a bridge for her to build up new relationships. If she only spoke English but not Spanish, she would not meet these Chicanos who provided her the experience of being an archivist for the Chicano Research collection, which path the way to her success.
