Oil Slicks France
In the past three years the French Atlantic coast was hit by two major oil slicks, due to the cargo ships the Erika and the Prestige. The coastal environment and ecosystem was extremely damaged, which in consequence had negative impacts on the coastal economy. To diminish the disaster the French government sent out the army, but wasn’t unable to help or finance every town on the coast needing their seashore to be cleaned up. So communities like Prefaille’s, small town where I participated in the cleaning, got their town halls to initiate cleaning procedure. Volunteer cleaning sessions were organized and special working groups were hired to take over the hard and painful work of cleaning the greasy fuel.After either one of the oil slicks the economy of coastal activities was negatively influenced. In addition numerous birds died of contamination from eating other contaminated preys or being covered with oil and not being able to fly. With the help of environmental and animal organization as well as volunteers many birds were rescued and cleaned up externally as well as internally. not allowed to fish in certain areas and certain fishes. Furthermore, fishing equipment: nets, floaters, boats, etc were damaged. Therefore, the public opinion was confused, they weren’t sure they should by sea products or not. Many coastal towns, being sea side resorts, needed their coasts cleaned before summer, so that seasonal citizens and tourists would be willing to come and keep the local businesses working and consequently the economy.
