Depression

Depression is a common severe mental illness that affects about 10% of the American population every year. We have all had feelings of "depression" when a friend blows you off, you and your spouse fight, when someone close to you has passed away, or we may feel depressed for no reason at all (ISMHO). Depression occurs when there is an unbalance in neurotransmitters along with outside influences and conflicts with one's inner self. Depression can become a big problem if left untreated. Therefore, if you are depressed, or see someone that may be a victim of this disorder you should encourage him or her to come forward and seek the help they need.
There are many symptoms that come along with depression. One symptom is having a depressed mood. Many people lose interest in things that they used to enjoy, or have a hopelessness attitude. Children may appear to be more irritable or cranky rather than sad. Some people mask their true feelings by substituting them by complaining about a physical pain (MDU). A person's views seem to be more pessimistic. For example, they might feel like a failure, and have a negative view of themselves. Many feel like everything's their fault, that life isn't worth living, and they just want to "give up" (MDU). Suicide and self-harm is a common symptom of clinical depression. Weight gain and loss is another common symptom. Some people go long periods of time without eating, either because they"re just not hungry or because they feel preparing a meal takes up too much energy. On the other hand some people may eat constantly, and gain a significant amount of weight. Sleeping problems are most likely to occur. Many people find it very difficult to fall asleep, or may wake often at night and then often can't fall back asleep. Others oversleep and become restless during the day because they had too much sleep. This makes day-to-day tasks (for example, getting cleaned up in the morning for work or school) near impossible.
