Crime crowding the news?

For news networks and local newscasts alike, sensationalism of crime has become a necessity to the daily broadcast. Countless studies are always being done that calculate the effects that violence on television has on our society. While Americans love to complain about the network’s overuse of crime, they continue to tune into these “crime-filled” broadcasts each night. There are a number of reasons for the abundance of crime in all of the news media today like for instance the fact that the American crime rate is so much higher than in other countries. Networks report on the information that they have, and seeing as how crime is so prevalent in our society, it is bound to be highly prevalent in the news. For this reason, it has not only become necessary for networks for higher ratings and informing the public, but now, viewers expect and await the news of the latest crime. Without the sensationalism of crime, television news would not be the enormous media it is today.

If someone were to go to a search engine on the web and type the phrase “crime in the news,” they will not be finding many reports criticizing the abundance of crime in the news, but instead the top most searched sites that

appear at the heading of the search include titles like “Crime News 2000, ‘true crime and criminal justice stories.’” and “Crime and Police News.” Search engines list their findings based on the most popularly visited sites thus, the American public are the ones questing after the bloody news that fills the news each night. At the same time though, one of the more popular complaints about the news media is in response to the reports of violence. And while we continue to complain about the crime, we also keep buying our youth video games like Grand Theft Auto which endorse violence to the utmost extent. So the networks, despite what the people claim, headline their nightly broadcasts with crime because people watch it.
