History of the People of Uromi

The Three Concepts namely history, society, and culture denotes events, ideas, attitudes, believe system and traditions all of which relate to the totality of a people's way of life. In a nutshell, therefore, my focus of this research, is simply asking, "Who are the people of Uromi?.
             THE ORIGIN OF UROMI.
Uromi is located in the present Esan region of Edo state in the mid " western part of Nigeria. Stories relating to the origin of the people are varies. The most prominent is the over flagged and perhaps derogatory story of flight of Esan people from the Benin region in the 15th century in reactions to some obnoxious laws during the reign of certain King (Oba) Ewuare of the Benin region. This story may create the impression of a cowardly people who rather than face the threat from an over bearing ruler took the easier option of a flight into the bush. It could also present the picture of a people who were violently independent and who were unprepared to broach oppression and intimidation. Subsequent events in the history of Uromi seem to have given credence to this letter position. What is however more worrisome about the migration story is the erroneous impression that there was no human settlement in the Esan region before the migration of the 15th century. .
Recent archeologist that work in Esan area reveal that for over half a million years; there have been evidence of human habitation in the Esan region. The people practiced a culture of massive earth construction similar to those which were later to be practice in Benin region. .
This would be further suggest that the exodus which took place about 1400 during the reign of king Ewuare were not just a blind adventure undertaken by a group of people in Benin which journey culminated in Esan land. Rather, it was a deliberate and well organized mission to find refuge among distant ancestral brothers if the new wave of migrants letter overwhelmed their host and established their style of kingship, the event merely raise a difference issue and doesn't explain the origin of the autochthonous group.
