Impression Formations

Students from the South Australian Matriculation (SAM) Programme conducted an investigation focusing on the development of impression formed towards people. An impression is a feeling or thought formed on others. It may be from the influence of characteristics, features or traits of peoples that was triggered from a past. This investigation is performed based on which stimuli, audio or visual, would shape a deeper and more impactful first impression. I hypothesise that visual stimulus might form a stronger first impression compared to audio stimulus. This is due to humans dominant interest towards others appearances, it is the most basic thing we notice before we start a conversation. Their facial expression, body posture, gestures and attire are distinct cues we examine for. As to audio stimuli, it is more dubious thus leaving a weaker impression due to the lack of significance in a person's characteristic.
             Procedure.
The investigation was conducted in Taylor's College Subang Jaya campus compounds. The population of this research involves all human being in general. A total of 29 students from the campus were gathered as the sample. Before the research was conducted, the participants were succinctly debrief about the procedure of the investigation. They were also given all rights to withdraw at anytime throughout the investigation without any particular reason. After being debriefed, each participant was required to fill up an informed consent form as an evidence to their acknowledgement on the survey of the research. After the informed consent form was collected, the participants were then randomly allocated into two groups. One of the group was exposed to a visual only footage for a time span of 60 seconds. They were told to focus only on the male presenter in the footage. Whereas the other group was exposed to an audio only footage for the same amount of time. After the presentation, the first impression formed towards the male presenter in the footage was recorded by both groups of students using a First Impression Scale (FIS).
