Inequalities Between Urban and Suburban Schools

The inequality of funding between different districts and areas plays a significant role in education, so funding should be equalized. Inequality has caused a separation between rich and poor. Therefore, the state should be more active in distributing funds equally amongst different districts instead of leaving this responsibility solely to the local government (Dayton & Dupre, 2004). This inequality should be brought to the attention of the general public. There is a need for equality amongst public school funding litigation to pull through. There shouldn't be a reason for parents to think twice about their local public schools that their children would attend. Every school should present equal opportunities with the materials and programs they provide as well as the attention that every student needs. .

The litigation for equal funding has been around for a long time. There have been many court cases in many different states that are fighting for equal funding (Dayton & Dupre, 2004). Public schools have been historically funded locally, so it is understandable that public schools are still mostly funded by the local government (Dayton & Dupre, 2004, p. 2355). The disparity between different areas and districts has caused a great uproar in the litigation for equal funding. Reitz (1993) states that, "The gross disparities in funding between school districts of the same state have prompted a wave of litigation. As of September 1992, twenty-three states faced litigation over public school financing." In Dayton and Dupre's article regarding the litigation for equal funding, the authors mention many court cases that fought for the right of equal funding and opportunities for students no matter what socio-economic group or race they come from (2004). One of the most memorable cases, due to being the first successful case in the litigation for equal funding, is a case that was taken to the California Supreme Court in 1971, Serrano v.
