The Art of Public Speaking

When I first started to communicate with large groups of people I was a freshman in high school. I was completely filled with anxiety and the sweat was pouring out like waterfalls. Now that I have had to give multiple speeches I have become less nervous, but I would like to take advantage of this opportunity and help my verbal delivery. I would also like to enhance my audience analysis skills, so that I can truly see if my audience gets my core message. All of the great leaders in history have excellent persuasive speaking skills and I plan on becoming a leader in the Registered Student Organizations that I am currently in. .
When I give a typical presentation I get nervous, sweaty, and my thoughts will occasionally get jumbled. When I prepare for a speech I will write it out about a three weeks ahead of when I have to give it. Then I will practice and memorize small parts of the speech at a time because it is easier for me. I think of myself as being a fairly confident person when it comes to communicating one-on-one or in a small group because there is talking back and forth and that is the kind of energy that I feed off. I would not say that I am outgoing but I can adapt to almost any situation and this makes communicating with strangers very easy to me. I am a very organized person when it comes to preparing. I will go through my speech and hi-light parts that I have completely memorized or that I am have trouble with that way I know what I need to work on. One thing that I am not good with is time management during the speech. I will tend to speak faster when I am speaking in front of an audience so it is hard for me to hit the mark in a timed speech. I think that I give pretty average speeches but I want to be a person that walks into a room a people can just tell that they know what they are doing. I also feel that I use to much small talk because I have no problem talking but I cannot remember what they say after five minutes of talking to them.
