Controlling and Manipulating Power


            In George Orwell's 1984, the Party of the totalitarian country Oceania, which deceives the people through tricks and lies in order to maintain its power. It reveals how an authority utilize technology, propaganda, centralized power and force to control people's behaviors and thoughts. Since Winston, the hope of rebellion also surrendered to the Party in the end, the story alarms the society by a gray and sad ending, and also reminds the society of not abusing power to control people. However, nowadays governments are still manipulating the society and control the people by their over power, such as the surveillance, the fear and cheat on people. .
             In 1984, people are under surveillance 24/7, like telescreen and though police. Party uses telescreen, hate activities and government ministries to modify reality and create fear, and power and wealth are concentrated in the Inner Party. Nowadays, the skillful and technological surveillance and manipulation of government limited people's freedom. There is misleading information to distract citizens from knowing the truth; only a small group of population holds power, allowing the wealth gap between rich and poor to become extreme.
             Technology has been advancing more and more rapidly in recent decades, most of people rely on technology to communicate with each other. There are many advantages of using technology properly with a good intention. However, there are also many defects of abusing technology in order to gain private benefits. In 1984, telescreen serves a purpose of carrying constant surveillance and broadcasting propaganda. None of party numbers can turn if off except some of the Inner Party, they can be seen and heard whatever they do 24/7. In modern society, almost every individual are using mobile devices which can be tracked down by government at any time. "Big Brother is watching you." (1) The public surveillance carries the similar idea as in 1984.
