Globalization and Barbados

Globalization is something that happens not only on the island of Barbados, but in every other country around the world. The process of globalization can be very fast, or progressively slow. Many factors can contribute to globalization and its effect on a country over time. In The Parish Behind God's Back I have seen many excellent examples of globalization in tourism, religion, and immigration, that effected the complete transformation of the tiny island. The examples I have found have changed the country, and still continue to do so today. .
Tourism was not always the main source of income of Barbados, but when sugar cane became more available throughout the world, the demand was not as high. Barbados had beautiful beaches and gorgeous terrain, with perfect weather year round. It began its start of tourism around "1960 as growing numbers of Europeans and North Americans began to travel with the advent of jet travel, more disposable income and vacation time, and affordable package tours, the Barbadian government began actively promoting tourism" (Gmelch, George, and Sharon Gmelch. Chapter 3. The Parish behind God's Back: The Changing Culture of Rural Barbados. Ann Arbor: University of Michigan, 1997. 42. Print.). As more and more tourists visited the island, technology began to change to keep up with the accommodation of new guest, changing and globalizing the island. "The country was also politically stable and had a high level of basic services-airport, deep water harbor, paved road system, pure water, ample electricity, telephones."(Gmelch, George, and Sharon Gmelch. "Chapter 3." The Parish behind God's Back: The Changing Culture of Rural Barbados. Ann Arbor: University of Michigan, 1997. 42. Print.). With all these new advances, came a big price on the changing culture of Barbados. Barbarians were now able to communicate with others far from home and keep up to date with things going on around the world.
