Comparative Essay - The Matrix and Oedipus Rex

In both the Matrix and Oedipus Rex, the oracles play major roles in the main characters' story. The oracles' prophecies are used so that the characters may know what may lie ahead for them in the future so that they can have slight control over their destiny. The natures of these prophecies are to be intentionally vague and cryptic so as to not reveal too much information about an individual's future. Due to the nature of such prophecies, freedom of choice predominates over inescapable fate.
The oracles used the prophecies in order to show the characters the path that their destiny will take them. As can be seen in both the Matrix and Oedipus Rex, the oracles' prophecies were cryptic and were worded as if it were a riddle. The use of prophecy in such a manner was so as to be deliberately vague so that the receiver of their prophecy will not know too much about their future. This was clearly stated in the Matrix: "there's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path" (Morpheus said after Neo saves Trinity on roof). This quote from Morpheus can be said about the manner as to which the oracles give their prophecies. The characters may have an idea as to what their future may have in store for them, but the characters must discover it as they go on through life. If one were to know exactly what their 'path' has in store for them, than they may attempt to delve as far off their intended path as far as possible. Although the prophecies in both the Matrix and Oedipus Rex are intentionally vague so as to keep the characters' fates not entirely known, the characters in Oedipus Rex perceive the prophecies as an inescapable fact. This is shown when Oedipus is told "You will murder your father, and lay with your mother." Rather than taking the oracle's information and going about his life differently so as to prevent this event from occurring, Oedipus attempts to escape from this fate.
