Hardship and A Lesson Learned

Nobody has an easy life, not even if it is an extremely privileged one. No one can go through life without adversity to overcome, and I am no exception. Although I do come from a successful family in an above average town, I have had my fair share of troubles in my life. Only two years ago, I had to overcome a hardship that was very difficult, a problem that can consume your life and stop you from truly living it. That difficulty was my family. .
In the summer of 2012, my family and I took a trip down to the beach for a week, staying in a rented vacation home. There I first learned of the extent of my family's problems. I had noticed for the last couple of months both of my sisters had been acting strange. They were very distant and would rarely talk, especially not to each other. However this was only the tip of the iceberg. My parents sat me down on the couch at that beach house and began to explain to me what had been going on with my sisters up until this point in time. This was the first time I had ever seen my father cry, and I hope it was the last as well, because it only reflected the amount of pain I was going to feel. They explained to me that my sisters were both suffering from depression at this time, which was why they always seemed so isolated and reluctant to socialize. However, this was still not the main point of the conversation. My parents went on to explain that my sisters were hurting themselves, and not only through cutting or other forms of self-harm. One of my sisters suffered from anorexia in addition to her depression. If only she could have seen herself through my eyes instead of hers during that time, she would have seen herself in a much better light. My other sister was fortunately not suffering from an eating disorder, however did do something much worse to herself. My dad told me with tears in his eyes as if he had blamed it on himself that she had attempted suicide not too long ago, and was going to be moved into a hospital as soon as we drove home from the beach until she was safe enough to leave again.
