At seventeen Mariah arrived in New York City in 1987. Mariah was excited at the fact her life would be changing. She felt free being on her own but was a horrible time too. She had only one pair of worn shoes, no money, no connections for stardom, but had a lot of confidence in herself. Most importantly she had a burning desire to make it on her own.

There was a bit of a little problem though Warner Bros was still interested in Mariah and would be even more interested if they found out that Sony wanted her too. There was a bit of a war about this but Sony had won and got Mariah. In December 1988 Mariah Carey had signed on the bottom line of Sony Records. From then on Mariah was a hit. She had spent the next decade have a #1 single every year. Making an album every year winning a lot of awards. Many awards you can imagine. In the year 2000 she won the award of Best Artist of a Decade. Truly Tommy Mottola knew she would be a hit and that's why today she did achieve her goals. Ever since she was a little girl she knew she was going to be a singer no matter what came her way. (White)

Mariah had many jobs but they didn't last long. She held jobs as a coat-check girl, a hair sweeper in a beauty salon (which she quit after two days when the manager wanted to change her name to echo), and a waitress. As a waitress she was very bad at it. She would be rude to customers, mess up orders, and anything else you can imagine. Mariah had said on a VH1 interview one time,” I had this real bad attitude when I used to work. I would think to myself why am I here? I want to be in a studio singing and doing my own thing.” During her breaks at work she would sit down and write lyrics to her songs so it would help her get stuff off her mind and to keep on working no matter what kind of day she was having. She struggled very hard, but not for a long time. But to her it was like an eternity. It was like boom one day she just got handed a piece of gold and that was it for her. Thanks to the drummer, Brenda K. Starr, and Tommy Mottola they made her what she is today. Mariah is forever grateful to them and will never forget the ones who believed in her. Mariah today is still going strong with millions of fans still adoring her and loving her music.

For a couple of months living in the city she was totally dedicated in the matter in survival. It was hard for her and the roommates trying to get the rent together every month. Food was ever a more scarce for them. A box of macaroni and cheese would last them a week. For several months it was so bad that Mariah would live on a bagel and an iced tea a day which she would bum off of a sympathetic deli owner. Mariah had simply come to New York in one pair of clothing which was a short jacket, a pair of black stretch pants, and a pair of laced up shoes that was her mother’s. She had no money to buy shoes so in the wintertime she would basically walk in the snow with holes in her shoes.

Mariah had no interest at this time to date anyone.
