Qualites of Katniss Everdeen and Beowulf

A hero is a man of distinguished courage or ability admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. Katniss Everdeen from, The Hunger Games, and Beowulf from the story "Beowulf" portray these qualities in similar, but also unique ways for their own. Both Katniss and Beowulf are similar in the fact that they both possess some of the same heroic qualities, including a noble birth, bravery, intelligence and resourcefulness. Another quality they both portray would be the reverence they have for the values of their society. With that being said, their main similarity would have to be that they are both dominant figures that suffer pain, but in the end, they conquer their enemy.
Most would say that Katniss and Beowulf were very strong in many ways. Beowulf was said to have "the strength of thirty men in his mighty handgrip." Beowulf displayed his strength when he ripped off Grendel's limb, the fight in the cave under water, and the magic sword. Katniss on the other hand, has her own life riding on the line, along with making her district proud. She believed nor trusted anyone and relied on her coach to teach her everything she needed to know to survive the battle and stopped at nothing. Even if that meant killing one of her own from her district. Although, both are much alike, they are very different. A major difference is the way they kill. Katniss Everdeen embarks on a journey armed only with her bow, her arrow and her wits: She must survive a televised death match against 23 other young people. Katniss is less eager to take life than is Beowulf, but Katniss faces mere mortals rather than the Spawn of Cain and a dragon. She must kill her own in order to triumph. She doesn't have anyone in this battle; it's just her and her bow and arrow. On the other hand, Beowulf kills Grendel, a savage monster, that had to be destroyed, and did so without weapons. Grendel's mother, however, acted only out of retribution, and Beowulf had to use magic to kill her.
