Cy Young
The Cy Young Award recognizes the best pitchers from both the American and National Leagues in the MLB every year. Though it is an important award, not many know about Cy Young himself and what he accomplished to have the honor of having an award named after him. This provoked my interest in learning about Cy Young and how he was the first dominating pitcher in baseball. After growing up on a farm in Ohio, Denton True Young started his baseball career in Canton in the Tri-State League. It was not long before he became known as Cy because his fastball was thought to resemble a cyclone because it was so fast. After having a 15-15 record, he went to the Cleveland Spiders for $500 at the age of 23. He made his debut against Chicago and won 8-1 with a three hitter. He soon became recognized as a great pitcher. In 1901 Cy was offered a $600 raise to his $2400 a year by Ben Johnson to move to the Red Sox. Ben Johnson was forming the American League. The most striking aspect of Cy Young’s career is the statistics. In his 22 year career he threw three no hitters. The first against Cincinnati in 1897 in which CY walked one batter. His second was
In his career, Cy had 511 wins, 751 complete games, and 7,356 innings pitched. These may never be broken. He had a 2.63 earned run average in an era when there was rarely relief pitchers used. He struck out 2 batters for every one that he walked and led in the fewest walks per nine innings six times. Perhaps Cy Young's most memorable day was August 13, 1908, when the Boston Post sponsored a "Cy Young Day." All American League activity was suspended for the day so that the All-Star team could honor the veteran pitcher by meeting the Red Sox on a exhibition game at the old Huntington Avenue Grounds. An hour after the gates were opened to let in the crowd, 20,000 fans had jammed the park. An additional 10,000 were turned away because there was no room. Young, who pitched the first two innings against the All-Stars, was so overcome by emotion that, "he could make no response to the presentation speeches." Finally, in 1911 as a memeber of the Braves, Cy pitched his last game. a perfect game against the Philadelphia A’s. The interesting thing is that he was so concentrated on doing his job that he did not even notice he hadn’t allowed
