Creative Learning in the Classroom

Creative learning in the classroom was something I have always enjoyed as a child; it gave me the opportunity to experiment with my peers in new and exciting ways. As a teacher, I want to give my pupils this opportunity to learn creatively, as not only will it stimulate and produce creativity in their own minds to develop certain skills, but also it should help them enjoy learning about a subject they could have previously displayed little interest in. With every teaching method, there are positives and negatives to review alongside the learning outcomes, which is why it is important to combine the creative/fun side and the academic side together.
Personally, I believe that children learn much better when they are having fun, they become more involved in the lesson and are even eager to find out more on the subject and do independent learning after the school day ends. I have experienced this first hand when introducing MFL to a Year 5 class. My sister was on her final placement during her PGCE and asked for my assistance as I had studied German. I planned and organized the lesson so that there would be several things for the children to do, to try to ensure they received a good introduction to the German language. Beginning the afternoon, I taught the children how to say a basic greeting; "Hello, my name is.What is your name?" After all of the children repeated this greeting to each other in front of the class, I moved on to the next section. I split the class into three groups at random; I handed out pictures of the Berlin Wall explaining a brief history and background. Their task was to draw and color their own graffiti onto their picture, which was a good way to integrate cross-curricular activities as it included Art. .
My sister supervised another group where they tasted various German foods and the last group, supervised by the TA, were completing general knowledge worksheets, which included various questions such as "list 5 cities in Germany" and "list 5 different German foods" and "what colors are included in the German flag".
