Gatsby’s Devotion to Daisy
Authors of distinguished novels create intricate characters that one has to analyze in order to fully grasp the entity of the character. In one of the greatest novels of the Twentieth Century, F. Scott Fitzgerald presents us with a complex and symbolic character, Jay Gatsby, in his novel, The Great Gatsby. In analyzing Jay Gatsby, his foolishness and absurdity is revealed through the way he attempts to court his obsession, Daisy Fay Buchanan. Gatsby’s fetish with Daisy starts when he first meets her as a teenager. Both of them fall madly in love with each other but due to ironic circumstances they can not be together and as a result, Gatsby’s obsession with Daisy grows. . Gatsby’s denial of the truth about his past shows him piteously doing anything to win Daisy back. Once a “penniless young man without a past” he transforms himself into a self-made millionaire and builds an extravagant mansion to show off to his obsession, figuring that that is all it takes to win her back. Even though Daisy is married and has a daughter, Gatsby “revalues everything in his house according to the amount of response it draws from her eyes.” The superficial way Gatsby goes about winning Daisy back is ludicrous because something with so little depth can not win him true love.
