Conflicts in A Midsummer Night's Dream


            In A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare there are many comedic actions displayed throughout the play. Most of the comedic scenes in this play rely on conflict. The whole play is based on a main conflict between Hermia getting married to Demetrius. Hermia's father gives her an ultimatum of marrying Demetrious or becoming a nun. However Hermia has a lover, Lysander who plans on running away with her. Demetrious also has a lover, Helena who is determined to impress Demetrious. The fairies of the forest also have a conflict in the play. Oberon and Titania, king and queen of the forest fight between the possessions of young Indian boy. Shakespeare uses this conflict between lovers to create humor throughout the play. .
             There are many conflicts between characters during the play. Many of these conflicts are very comedic. There are a three main scenes in the play that are very funny, where Shakespeare relies on conflict to emphasize the humor. The first place of conflict in this play that will be analyzed is the scene where Helena pesters Demetrious. Demetrious wants absolutely nothing to do with Helena but Helena will not abandon her love for Demetrious. Their dialogue is very funny in how they feel about each other. The second scene of the play that will be further analyzed is Tatiana and Oberon's quarrel over the Indian Boy. Oberon has a plan to win over the boy, seducing Tatiana into falling in love with, using his magical flower. Tatiana ends up falling in love with an ass which is very hilarious. The third and final conflict that will be further analyzed when Lysander and Demetrius suddenly falls in love with Helena. Lysander and Demetrius have had the flower juice squeezed on their eyes by Robin and king Oberon, which makes them both fall for Helena. This scene is very comedic because of Helena's reaction to Lysander's and Demetrius's kindness. Those are the three conflicts that will be further analyzed throughout the essay.
