The NCAA has many reasons for all of their rules and regulations regarding student athletes and the money they receive; one reason being the ease in which a school can pay a player to attend their school and be on their team. Most division one teams have aggressive recruiting practices, especially for the top rated athletes. If schools were allowed to pay their athletes, wealthier schools will win many recruiting wars. If all the top recruits went to only a few teams, everyone will know the outcome of games, taking away from the competition of the sport, and eventually making the industry less profitable. If students wanted unbalanced teams that will bid for athlete’s services, they should go pro. Student athlete’s priority in school is to concentrate more on the student side of school. The rationale is that these student athletes are receiving a free education that normally costs thousands of dollars for anyone else who is not on scholarship. People go to school as an investment for their future earnings, while student athletes on scholarship do not see the situation the same way because they do not have to pay back their loans. Furthermore, if an athlete does not make it big, whether the reason being injury, lack of talent, or not meeting potential, they will not be drafted onto a professional team, leaving them with only one choice, getting a degree, which is the very reason why students attend college.

Student athletes have many commitments to uphold leaving them with very little extra time, which is why the NCAA does not allow student athletes to work during the academic year. Hiring student athletes invites many ways schools can cheat and pay students to come to their school, like the “job front.”.
