Keeping Score in Baseball

If you are scoring at home or at the ballpark and the play “6-4-3” doesn’t ring a bell, then follow these simple steps to enjoy America’s national pastime even more.

First, you will have to go out to your local sports store or even the sporting goods department at Wal-Mart, and buy a scorebook (this is a book containing preprinted blank score sheets), or buy a program from a professional baseball game. The program will usually come with a score card. It may be a good idea to ask the vendor selling the program about the inclusion of a score card. If you cannot afford to purchase a score book, you can make your own using graph paper or even a piece of lined notebook paper.

Once you have your score card in hand, you will see at the top, a place for the date, time of game, and the teams playing. Along the side will be blank spaces to include the players’ names and positions. Out from the names and positions you will find the actual scoring part of the notebook. This will look like several tiny baseball fields, laid out in grid form, and separated by columns, which are actually the innings. It is a good idea to fill out this information before the game starts. In all professional basebal

There is one other play that is scored in baseball; the error. An error is scored when a ball is hit to the fielder, and the fielder, through reasonable effort, should have made the play, but instead, makes a mistake by incorrectly fielding or throwing the ball. To score this play, use an “E” in front of the number of the position who made the error. Let’s say the ball was hit to the shortstop, the shortstop throws the ball to the first baseman, but it’s over the first baseman’s head and the runner reaches first base safely. That is an error on the shortstop that you would simply score as “E6”.

Now that you have a grasp on defensive scoring, let us turn our attention on how to score offensively. Again, you need to be made aware of symbols and numbers used in baseball to accurately score the play. Make sure to use the following: K is used if the batter strikes out, BB is used if the batter walks, 1B is used if the batter is credited with a single, 2B is used if the batter is credited with a double, 3B is used if the batter is credited with a triple, and HR is used if the player hits a homerun. Using that information, a batter hits a double into left field. How would you write that down on your score sheet? You would simply write down “2B-7”. The 2B represents a double, the dash is used for the word “to”, and the 7 tells you what part of the field the ball was hit to. Let us use a more complicated, but common example: A batter hits a triple into right center field, but is thrown out trying to score at home plate. Involved in the play are the right fielder, the second baseman, and finally the catcher. Keeping in mind that you must use symbols a
