Both Dickens and Harper Lee use the first person narrative to convey a view of what society is like from a child’s point of view. They use the idea of a child speaking from the first person because of the innocence that is portrayed by a child’s voice. Using an adult would be less effective because they have already formed their opinions, of what they believe is right and wrong and social justice. Children are more open-minded. Utilizing the first person narrative helps adults get a sense of a child’s perspective on the world. Because both novels are told by children, they use other character’s views around them which gives them a insight into what the world is like from their point of view. This begins to create a third person. The story is told from a child’s view, so they easily pick up on things from older people.
