Sun escaped from the police out of Japan yet while he was in London, during 1986. Here, he was kidnapped by staff from the Chinese embassy, and held a prisoner to be sent back to China for almost certain execution. He was only saved by vigorous protests by the British government who got his release.

He returned to China in 1917 and the Provisional Assembly elected Sun to lead the Chinese Military Government, based in Guangzhou, and in 1921 he was elected president of this self-proclaimed national government at Guangzhou in S China. To develop the military power needed for the Northern Expedition against the militarists at Beijing, he established the Whampoa Military Academy (now Huangpu Military Academy), with Chiang Kai-shek as its commandant and with such party leaders as Wang Ching-wei and Hu Han-min as political instructors.
