Ukrainian Disagreement on Russian Sanctions


            The November 17th, the BBC article, "Ukraine: EU fails to agree on new Russia Sanctions," discusses the escalating conflict in Ukraine, and the measures that the European Union and the United States are planning to combat the issue of the pro-Russian separatist. Since January 2014, the Ukraine and Russia have been in a hostile conflict with regards to the pro-Russian separatists. More than 4,000 citizens have died in the Ukrainian conflict since then. On the 17th of November, European Union officials, along with representatives from the United States, met to establish sanctions for the Ukrainian separatists, while keeping the sanctions on Russia stagnant. The violence has continued to accelerate. The decision to work towards a comprise was pronounced a few days after pro-Russian rebels killed 9 members of the Ukrainian security forces. .
             Currently, leading global powers are all extremely divided about how to handle the situation, and whether to take action against Russia. Since April, separatists have been fighting government officials throughout Ukraine, calling for a vote on independence. At the time, Ukraine's President, Olexander Turchynov, announced the beginning of the states, "anti-terrorist operation," against pro-Russian separatists throughout the country. In an effort to reconcile, the United States, Russia, Ukraine, and European Union met at EU headquarters, to formulate a plan to "de-escalate" the crisis in the eastern region of Ukraine. A few days after the meeting, however, Turchynov commanded that the military resume their tactics against pro-Russian rebels in the eastern Ukraine. In September, a ceasefire was enacted by outlines of the deal, but continues to be broken on a regular basis. .
             The Ukraine has met with European Union ministers, in order to discuss the impending sanctions against the pro-Russian separatists and Russian officers.
