Clinical Theory Practice in the 21st Century

The medical world will forever be changing and advancing. Professionals of the medical field must adapt to the innovations as well as the politically volatile health care system, and the rising cost of health care. Scott, Matthews, and Kirwan, (2014) state, "Internationally, governments, taxpayers, and health policy makers must now consider carefully what is required by health services of its nurses and how this can be supported, facilitated and funded. Platitudes regarding person-centered, dignified, humane care will not be realized without adequate resourcing. Nursing is a vital part of such resources. Nursing is not an expendable cost to the health service, but a crucial element in care delivery and in the existence of a safe, effective, humane health service" (Scott, Matthews,& Kirwan, 2014, p.31). .
As registered nurses and patient advocates, we must concentrate on the dilemmas that confront us. Deva-Marie Beck, (2010) proposes that, "Nurses take a renewed vision and participation of the nurse in the active role of promoting the cause of human health, both locally and globally. While continuing the practices we have established, nurses can also create new, innovative and relevant practice (Beck, 2010, p. 317). Beck (2010) maintains that as nurses must focus on how to effectively promote health, and facilitate a healthy environment. Beck (2010) further states that continuing with Florence Nightingales philosophies, "We, as nurses, can assume, as Nightingale did, that our knowledge and experience is valuable to the wider general public, as well as for individual patients and their families. Like Nightingale, we can be health promotion experts in the community and contribute our expertise to media coverage, town hall discussions, and decisions made at regional and national meetings. With our mandate to improve health environments, we can educate leaders and even take leadership roles ourselves" (Beck, 2010, p.
